- Tras haber publicado en 1651 en inglés el "Leviatán" (Leviathan. London, John Holden, 1651, Hobbes regresa a Londres de su exilio parisiense. Su obra maestra recibe agresivas críticas por motivos religiosos y políticos a las que responde siempre con una contrarréplica. En 1668 (Appendix ad Leviathan en pp. 338-365 Opera philosophica, Vol. 2. Part 5. Amsterdam. Joan Blaeu, 1668) lo publicará traducido al latín, culminando no solo la evolución de su pensamiento político sino que acabará con la persecución. El Apéndice, dividido en tres partes, se debe leer como una respuesta a las acusaciones de las últimas décadas. En el primer capítulo, explica el Símbolo de Nicea para mostrar que su teología no contradice ninguna de las doctrinas exigidas por este credo. El segundo examina el significado de herejía, defendiendo que se aplicarán castigos espirituales a quien incurra en esta falta. Por último, repasará y defenderá algunas doctrinas polémicas del Leviatán-de contenido religioso- que habrían avivado la crítica de sus perseguidores
