- Assisted living is a residential housing and service alternative designed to augment and, in some cases, replace the traditional nursing home. It is a housing choice that offers greater independence, autonomy, and privacy to the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population - older, mentally and physically frail adults. As an alternative to institutionalization, assisted living provides those who need personal care assistance to carry out activities of daily living with a longterm care choice that nurtures an independent lifestyle. This much-needed book bases its recommendations on the analysis of hundreds of projects from the United States and Europe. It provides professionals, policymakers, educators, and students with an introduction to this innovative housing type, and offers ideas on how housing design can enhance the quality of life. Victor Regnier, an expert on architecture and gerontology, covers the spectrum of issues surrounding assisted living. He outlines approaches to creative management and service provision, and suggests financing strategies that reduce the cost of housing.
