Summary
How different is the criminal from the rest of us? Does society have the right to take his life? Truman Capote explored these questions in his non-fiction novel, "In Cold Blood"; and Orson Welles extends that exploration here. Perry Smith and his friend, Dick, have ruthlessly murdered an entire family. They are vicious killers, but, as the film and book make painfully clear, they are also men like the rest of us - at times gentle, pitiable, always human. Focusing on Perry, with flashbacks to his early life, this production gives a complex, compelling picture of a criminal. It forces us to understand this murderer, and having understood him, we wonder perhaps if society has the right, in turn, to murder him
