Summary
"it was learned that FBI agents in Cleveland had allegedly authorized the placement of ghostworkers on the union payroll and for this reason the Department of Justice was required to drop the case, as well as to dismiss two related convictions that the Department had already obtained. Published reports in the Los Angeles Times and other media sources have recently asserted that the agents' authorization story may not be true, and indictments against one or more FBI agents for making false statements, as well as against Jackie Presser for the placement of ghostworkers on a union payroll, may soon be returned. However, this possibility does not retrieve the considerable time and effort that has been wasted due to poor coordination between the Federal agencies involved in this case and a lack of adequate supervision by the Justice Department. I recognize that the degree of supervision exercised by the Justice Department over the FBI is, indeed, a sensitive question. No one wants the FBI to become politicized. But the Justice Department should certainly be able to obtain information from the FBI that directly affects its prosecutions"--Page 2
