Summary
"In June 1974, the Supreme Court issued a decision in the case of llforto v. Mancari which upheld the legality of Indian preference in the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service. The Court found that Indian preference did not violate equal opportunity statutes but rather was a proper way to achieve Indian self-government. The Court further ruled that Indian preference does not constitute racial discrimination but is more in the nature of a legitimate political discrimination based on the quasi-sovereignty of the Indian tribes"--Page 1
