Summary
The Department of Commerce generates and disseminates some of the nation's most important economic information that is of paramount interest to U.S. businesses, policy makers, and researchers. Because the dramatic rise in the number and sophistication of cyberattacks on federal information systems is of growing concern. Your committee requested that we determine if the Department of Commerce has effectively implemented (1) logical access and other information system controls over its computerized data, (2) incident detection and response capabilities, and (3) an information security management program and related procedures. This report provides a general summary of the computer security weaknesses we identified in the unclassified information systems of the seven Commerce organizations we reviewed as well as in the management of the department's information security program
