Summary
  • Portfolio of photographs depicting aerial views of battlefields and locations in France with accompanying interpretive text and maps on the Western Front of World War I, 1915-1917. The photographs were created by the Photographic Section of the United States Army Air Force from duplicate negatives it received from the General Staff of the French Army, circa 1918
  • The aerial photographs depict the lines of the German Army, trenches, barracks, machine gun emplacements, mine craters, and camouflaged military batteries. Locations depicted in the images include the regions of Alsace and Champagne; the departments of Somme and Nord (Flanders); the municipalities of Reims, Verdun, and Vouziers; and the Argonne Forest. A few photographs document battles in progress near Mont Cornillet in the Champagne region, April to May 1917
Biographical or historical data
During World War I, the Photographic Section of the United States Army Air Service was under the command of photographer and artist Edward Steichen (1879-1973).
