  • Preface : "... The Musica sacra, or Utica Collection, had chiefly for its object, the accomodation of the Handel and Burney Society, under whose patronage it was first published. The present work, which embraces, with suitable alterations and additions, most of the music contained in those collections, is intended to present to our readers a greater variety of chaste and classical pieces than has yet been offered ... in a single volume...Some of the old tunes are differently harmonized from the copies selected from Williams and Tansur ... those [former] copies are grossly incorrect .... Several American compilers have [unknowingly] published the [incorrect] pieces. Others..have neglected the remedy from motives of prudence ... the most numerous class of compilers have failed in their attempts [due to] a want of sufficient skill in the science of musical composition"--p. [iii]
  • Preface [ctd.] : ...Though a book of Rudiments of music recently published by one of the editors of this work, is designed as an introduction to it and in many instances will be bound with it in the same volume, yet as the Musica sacra may not always be accompanied by the Reader, we hope the few pages of the Rudiments in the present work may not be deemed superfluous .... We feel ourselves particularly indebted to Mr. S. Norton, professor of languages, in Hamilton College .... That [this] work may prove useful in disseminating a taste for chaste, classical music, and in aiding and enlivening the devotions of the pious, is the sincere wish of, the Compilers"--p. vi [i.e. iv]
