Summary
"At first sight the plot of Orlando is a simple one involving just five characters. The exotic Princess Angelica and her beloved Medoro are a happy couple pursued by two helplessly smitten rivals. Still inexperienced in affairs of the heart, Dorinda is also in love with Medoro. But as the opera runs its course, her developing maturity ultimately results in an exemplary display of self-conquest. Rather less straightforward is the affair involving the actual hero of the story, the knight Orlando. His integrity is at risk from the outset, torn as he is between the conflicting desires of love and the more enduring glory of military greatness. His inner balance is disturbed, little by little he loses his powers of reason. He eventually succumbs entirely to the grip of frenzy, before finally being healed by Zoroastro, who jealously protects his "fame"--In other words, his capability to return to fight other battles. Indeed Zoroastro is the only character capable of rising above such emotionality, appearing to exert a virtuoso control of the situation and ultimately safeguarding, at least in the opera's superficial structure, the ubiquitous happy ending, a sine qua non of opera seria."--Booklet
