Note
  • Dibner Library copy has atlas bound in two volumes: 1. "Vignettes" (31 x 45 cm.) has XXXIII leaves of plates (some col.), with images mounted on blank leaves, as issued. 2. "Tableaux" (61 cm.) has 48 leaves of plates (some col.), plus a hand-colored map of the route taken by the author on 2 facing pages at front of volume. Neither atlas v. includes a t.p.
  • The key-plate ("Lithographie der 21sten Tafel") and the folded table of temperatures are wanting.
  • Plate 23 in the "Tableaux" atlas v. is misnumbered 28 (as issued).
  • Text v. 1 has booksellers' and bibliographers' notes pencilled on back paste-down endpaper.
  • A typed description of this particular copy ([3] p.), provided by the San Francisco bookseller John Howell ca. 1969, is laid in the "Tableaux" atlas v.
  • The "Tableaux" atlas v. has an armorial bookplate for Mr. J.A. van Dijk; the same v. also has a bookbinder's label on front paste-down endpaper: A. v. Rossum, Hof-boekbinder.
  • Bookplate: Smithsonian Institution Libraries. The Charlotte and Lloyd Wineland Collection of Native American and Western Exploration Literature.
  • The two text v. and the "Vignettes" atlas v. are bound in a blue half-morocco binding over marbled paper boards, with marbled edges; the coat of arms of Léopold I of Belgium is gilt-stamped on the spines.
  • The "Tableaux" atlas v. is bound in burgundy half-leather over cloth-covered paper boards, with gilt-tooled cover and spine.
