Summary
  • "In the winter of 1621, in the early years of the crisis that became the Thirty Years War, a French ambassador came to London on a high-profile diplomatic visit." "The ambassador was entertained with a series of feasts, banquets and masques. One of these masques was presented at Whitehall on behalf of the king; the other was presented for the king, court and visiting ambassador at Essex House, the London residence of James Hay, Viscount Doncaster. The Essex House Masque of 1621 presents an annotated critical edition of the recently discovered manuscript text of that masque."
  • "Timothy Raylor reconstructs the political and cultural contexts of the masque, clarifying the diplomatic significance of the occasion and the various political pressures - foreign and domestic - that came to bear upon it." "The new text is examined in detail: the philosophical and political implications of its fable; its literary, philosophical and theatrical sources; analogues and parallels with other contemporary masque and ballets de cour. Raylor considers further its staging, costuming and possible authorship, suggesting that the masque may represent a collaboration between Inigo Jones and George Chapman."--Jacket
