This letter will explain the manner in which they executed the trust confided in them : Dear Brethren, the Committee [reports] that they have been fully aware of the extreme difficulty of making such a selection of tunes as should in all respects be accomodated either to the fancy or taste of every selection of our widely extended connexion [sic] .... It may be proper to suggest that the primary object of your Committee has been ... for the use of worshiping congregations ... they have therefore...carefully avoided the use of tunes ... incapable of being easily learned by ordinary congregations. Secondly. Fugue tunes [are disapproved of, thus] they have passed by those. Thirdly ... they have carefully affixed over each hymn in the new hymn-book the names of such tunes suitable to that hymn..."--p. iii-iv
