Summary
Northern Yorubaland is historically a frontier zone in north-central Nigeria, inhabited by ethnically diverse communities that formed mosaic of societies, which pursued different but complementary economic activities that coalwsced into dynamic interlocking relations evident today. The Northern Yoruba peoples were both beneficiaries and/or victims of region-wide events including the collapse of the Oyo Empire and the Atlantic slave trade. Using anthropological and historicla sources, this book reflects upon the pre-colonial migrations and processes of social formations and growth, the network of social interactions, ans experiences onthe yoruba norther frontier up to the beginning of the twentieth century. The dynamic historical experiences of the frontier communities from the past to the present urgently need to be documented in the light of recent anthropological and historical interpretations. How did these frontier communities respond to these external intrusions and what were the repercussions for their socio-political institutions? What can we learn about the nature of warfare, slave raiding, diplomacy, & ethnic interactions in the region? Frontier issues have become an essential key to understanding the predicaments of culture. This book also addresses the relationship between the frontier experience and the complicated issue of Yoruba ethnic definition in the region today. -- Publisher description
