Summary
Ezra Pound was the most controversial of modern American poets. He once described the crucial role of music and the visual arts, especially sculpture, in the search for a new poetic voice. Readings from Pound's verse, often in the poet's own inimitable voice, recur throughout the program. Hugh Kenner offers his assessment of Pound's achievement, concluding that Pound, in his own electic and elusive fashion, "can be simultaneously an american poet, an imitator of the Anglo-Saxon seafarer and a translator of the eleventh book of the Odyssey." Pound once admitted, "I resolved that at thirty I would know more about poetry than any man living."
