Summary
Langston Hughes, among the most versatile and prolific of modern American authors, achieved distinction in poetry, fiction and drama. Race is at the center of his work-the baeuty, dignity and heritage of blacks in America. The television program begins with images of Africa. It proceeds bio- graphically, with sequences from Kansas, Ohio, Washington DC, Paris, Dakar and Senegal. Hughes discusses the influences of the 1920s jazz and blues on the development of his oen poetic voice. That influence is dramtically underscored by performances of "Listen Here Blues" and " To a Negro Jazz Band in a Parisian Cafe." Excerpts from "Feet o'Jesus" demostrate a comparable influence by Negro spirituals on his work
