Summary
The television program elucidates Wallace Stevens' ideas, dispelling the mis- conception that his thought was either crudely idealistic or simplemindedly aethetic. At the same time, the program emphasizes that Stevens was not a philosopher: he was a bold and brilliant poet, who explored the workings of the human mind with a subtlet and precision philosophers might envy. The verbal textures and symbolic techniques of Stevens' poems are represented by stylized scenes and lyrical cinematography. Critic Helen Vendler and poets Mark Strand and James Merrill discuss Stevens' personality and literacy aspirations, speculating on their origin
