Summary
Walt Whitman was the first major poet to create a truly American vision and style. His extraordinary example gave Ameican verse much of its character and diction. Whitman considered democracy and appropriate grist for his own poetic mill, inventing a radically different sort of free verse to express what he had to say. In the television program, Galway Kinnell gives a rigorous reading of several passages, conveying both the exuberance of "Song of Myself" and the poignance of "Out of the Endlessly Rocking." This program incorporates period photographs, including those of Matthew Brady and several paintings by Thomas Eakins
