When we learned of the illness that was to end his life, we moved the date back to January of that year ... All of the papers read at the symposium are included--many of them substantially revised--in this volume: to them are added studies by several scholars who contributed essays out of respect and affection for a man whose work touched on and influenced their own scholarship"--Pref
