This book covers all major revolutions and the major theories explaining them. Revolutions and state breakdowns are the primary focus as [the author] presents prominent theories and describes the process of revolutions. The book covers famous revolutions from history (France, Russia, China) and several social and political revolutions in the third world (Cuba, Nicaragua, Iran, and the Philippines). Given the frequency of revolutionary movements, a key question addressed by the book is "Why are actual revolutions so rare?" [He] also assesses the state breakdowns in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union after 1989, the typical outcomes of revolutions, and the future of revolutions. An appendix presents biographical and autobiographical sketches of several of the most prominent scholars of revolutions. Features of this text and to the new second edition include: a new Chapter 8 which covers Jihadism and terrorism ; an updated epilogue that connects an exploration of the future of revolutions with the future of terrorism and terrorist movements. This work also presents an analytic framework for understanding revolutions. It provides comprehensive coverage: of three major historical revolutions (France, Russia, China), four Third World revolutions (Cuba, Nicaragua, Iran, and the Phillippines), and the "revolutions from above" in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The lives of 10 major students of revolutions from John Foran to Eric Wolf, some in their own words, are included in the appendix
